THE BEACON, HONG KONG

Executive Director Cary Lau drew inspiration from Hong Kong’s post-war architecture to design The Beacon, establishing a precedent for contemporary interpretations of traditional structures. During the early post-war period, illegal construction of iron balconies was prevalent in residential units in Mong Kok, a densely populated area in Hong Kong.

These balconies were constructed to maximize views and areas. The Beacon reinterprets these structures in a contemporary manner, utilizing irregular protrusions to provide unobstructed views from each unit. Additionally, inspired by the domestic gardens people create on iron balconies, the green wall on the podium facade aims to further connect the building to the historic urban landscape and provide additional greenery at pedestrian level. South Star provides the exterior glass curtain wall, employing digital ceramic printing and self-cleaning technology on the first surface of the glass.
